Sewage warning in north Newport

A sign at the 68th Street parking area in north Newport warns of possible sewage contamination in the area after a landslide took out a sewer line. Newport City Engineer Chris Janigo said the landslide was first discovered by city crews on Feb. 15, but he believes it occurred several days earlier. The sewer rupture has been contained, Janigo said, and the city expects to have a permanent fix in the coming weeks. Sewer service is out at three residences, and six others are operating on a temporary system.
